A new Sobeys opened up today at 55 Peakview Drive in South Bedford. Crowds of people visited the new grocery store, which will open at 7 a.m. on Monday mornings, and stay open 24 hours. Sunday's hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Goodlife Fitness Club and TD Canada Trust are two of the businesses opening up in the area in the near future.

Is bedford expanding, and rockingham shrinking? I recall the dividing line was Fern Ave.

I am sure that there is a lot more of us confused regarding this issue! Some of us are told that we live in Bedford, but have a Halifax mailing address?Others are saying anything East of the Ravines Park? With all the new subdivision and street construction, it is all very confusing! Where does Bedford South begin and end? In fact, can anyone please tell us what are the actual Bedford boundry lines these days

Thank you,
Bill

In Councillor Tim Outhit’s own words:

“Here is the quick elevator speech or rule-of-thumb that I use.

District 21 (Bedford) runs from Clearwater on the Bedford Hwy to the Bedford Common commercial park on Duke St. It runs from the Bedford Basin up the Hammonds Plains Rd as far as the Kearney Lake Rd.

The Ravines are in Bedford. The original or lower end of Larry Uteck Blvd and the Bedros area is presently in Councillor Debbie Hum’s district.

The upper end or newer end of Larry Uteck is part of Bedford. The new French high school is approximately the dividing point. Debbie and I joke that she has the school, but I got the field!

The UARB will rule on the size of council and district boundaries by this fall. One possible scenario is the boundary could shift so that Larry Uteck becomes the boundary. The right side of Larry Uteck would be in Bedford, the left (or south side) would be in Halifax.”

That argument is based on the “electoral” or political district – NOT the actual city boundaries. The two are often confused. If we were to go by that augment, Larry Uteck as whole is considered Bedford from a Federal political standpoint. Does that make us Bedford? No, because the reference we should be investigating is the actual city boundary map located on HRM’s website.. These definitions need to be revisited – and the map on HRM’s website, which shows actual city boundaries, needs to reflect the changes. All changes should be communicated to the residents on Larry Uteck.

I find it unethical and offensive that business’s such as Sobey’s, GoodLIfe Fitness and TD Bank all identify their new locations either as “Bedford” or “South Bedford”, when I own a house further down (on the same side of the street) and am referred to as Halifax. I understand that businesses like to communicate a more prestigious postal code, especially if it bumps up public perception and potentially, property value, but as a resident, I expect the same courtesy extended to me.

The city needs to address this.
