If you have a child who will be 5 years of age by December 31st, 2012 who will be attending public school in September, you need to register your child for school by March 1st.
Proof of residence, your child’s birth certificate and health card number (and expiry) are all required at the time of registration. You simply take these documents to your local school to register your child. Students who wish to enter French immersion register at their local school (not all schools offer this option).
Bedford families considering French Immersion Primary in September are invited to attend a French Immersion Information Session on Wednesday, February 8th at 7 pm in the gym at the Eaglewood site.
Please note: All registration for Sunnyside Elementary School students takes place at the Eaglewood site, not Fort Sackville or Waverley Road.
For more information on the primary registration process, to access forms, or to find out whether you live in a district offering early immersion, please check out www.hrsb.ns.ca.
For information on whether your child is eligible to be educated with the Acadian schoolboard, Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP), please check out csap.ednet.ns.ca.
You may have heard about Night Hoops basketball programs that are designed to give youth something positive to do in the evenings to reduce the chances of them getting into trouble.
Unfortunately, basketball isn’t for everyone. That’s where programs like Class Is In by Concrete Roots (featured in last week’s blog) are so important, as they give youth accessible options for healthy lifestyle choices.
HRM has unwittingly taken this theory to a whole new level with the opening of the Oval – perhaps the biggest phenomenon on the healthy crime prevention front to ever hit HRM. I go quite regularly and am continually impressed by the scores of people there, many of whom I’m sure would never have skated if it wasn’t for this unique, free opportunity – complete with free skate, helmet and skating aids.
The Oval is a wonderful venue for exercise, fun and fresh air; a perfect recipe for physical and mental health.

Halifax Regional Police would like to remind the public not to leave valuables in a vehicle while it is unattended, particularly if the item is in plain-view.
Recently, trends have been noted in the parking lots and side streets around Peninsular Halifax. Items that are being targeted are purses, high end electronics, and/or laptop computers. These items are being stolen from unattended vehicles, and in many cases the items have been left in plain view inside the vehicle.
Thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity. Valuables in plain sight are a temptation for would be thieves. It is recommended that such items not be left in your car. If it is absolutely necessary to leave items in your car, they should be locked in the trunk out of plain view before arriving at your destination.
When possible, park in open well lit areas and ensure your vehicle is locked at all times. Anyone observing suspicious activity in or around parked vehicles should report it to police immediately at 490-5016.
Dear Friends:
The original information given to us for the information sessions for parents of students entering grade 10 at Charles P. Allen (CPA) High this fall was incorrect.
The first session, which starts at 6:30pm, will be for parents interested in having their children registered in the IB Program. This session will be held at the CPA Library.
The second session, which starts at 8:00pm, will be for parents of all students moving to high school in September 2012. This session will be held at the CPA Cafeteria.
In the event that today’s sessions are cancelled due to weather, the sessions will be rescheduled for Monday, February 6, 2012 with the same start times.
Sincerely yours,
Kelly Regan
Dear Friends:
I hope your January hasn’t been too cold (or wet, for that matter) thus far. I wanted to bring a couple of issues to your attention. Many (but not all) are school related -
School Boundary Review Meeting Rescheduled (happened on January 26)
The Halifax Regional School Board has been conducting a school boundary review of some of the areas in the Charles P. Allen family of schools.
HRSB presented its interim report to the community at a meeting on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Basinview Drive Community School, 273 Basinview Drive, Bedford. (This meeting replaced an earlier meeting cancelled due to bad weather on January 12).
School boundary reviews are conducted by local school boards and not the provincial government. Nonetheless, I feel it’s important for me to publicize this meeting; upcoming decisions by the board may well impact families in your neighbourhood. (For more information on the boundary changes, check out www.hrsb.ns.ca).
