New drive-thrus and take-out restaurants possible
North West Community Council (NWCC) is considering a planning amendment that would allow for drive-thru and take-out restaurants across the street from the new French High School being built in Bedford South.
The amendment, which is being requested by Clayton Developments, was recommended for approval by HRM staff during a NWCC meeting at the LeBrun Centre last Thursday.
During public discussion, a number of Bedford residents expressed concern about the proposed amendment. One resident said he was concerned about the additional exhaust created by idling vehicles waiting in line at a drive-thru.
Another resident said drive-thru and take-out restaurants would create additional litter and vehicle congestion. She suggested the restaurants, which have yet to be determined, could produce unhealthy fast foods that would be easily available to high school students.
The resident also felt fast food restaurants wouldn’t fit with the surrounding neighbourhood, which features large single family homes.
“The people in Southgate, do they want a fast food joint near their homes?”
Kevin Neatt, a representative of Clayton Developments, said the company struggled with the idea of a drive-thru. However, he suggested such restaurants were beneficial for parents who were concerned about leaving children alone in their vehicles.
Councillor Brad Johns (Middle and Upper Sackville – Lucasville) asked if council could vote on the amendment during the meeting. Instead, council decided to consider the amendment at a future date.
“I don’t see anything wrong it,” said Johns, when asked about the amendment following the meeting.
When asked what sort of restaurants might fit the proposed location, HRM planning official Thea Langille said Starbucks.
