North West Community Council has unanimously approved the development application for a large residential and commercial subdivision in Bedford South.

The application, submitted by Clayton Developments, was formally approved during a sparsely attended North West Community Council meeting at the LeBrun Centre on Thursday night.

Council considered the application after a brief presentation from HRM staff, which recommended approval.

North West Community Council, one of six in HRM, is comprised of Councillor Tim Outhit (Bedford), Councillor Brad Johns (Middle and Upper Sackville – Lucasville) and Councillor Robert P. Harvey (Lower Sackville), who chairs the council.

There was virtually no discussion about the application prior to its approval.

The new development, which is a part of the Bedford South Master Plan, will cover 146 acres (59 hectares) to the east of Highway 102.

Preliminary tree clearing has begun for a highway interchange, which will run through the heart of the development.

The interchange area will feature commercial buildings and could include such things as a grocery store, Canadian Tire and restaurants.

The rest of the development will include a mixture of residential dwellings, including single family homes, townhouses and apartment buildings.

Land has also been set aside for parks and open space.
