Taoist Tai Chi Internal Arts of Health (part of Asian Heritage Month)

Taoist Tai Chi Internal Arts of Health is specifically designed for improving health. People of all abilities are encouraged to learn about the benefits of this art form which include improve circulation, balance, posture, strength, flexibility and reduced stress. The session will be led by an accredited volunteer instructor from the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada.

Nancy Ceulemans, certified HANDLE screener, will talk about this holistic approach to learning, behavioural, social and neurodevelopmental issues. HANDLE is used to help with learning difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, problems with memory and organization, sleeping dirsorders, autism, ADD, ADHD and more. HANDLE was created by Judith Bluestone, author of The Fabric of Autism. Registration is required, call 490-5757.

Public Town Hall: Internet Access – Community-directed fibre to the home (FTTH) is a new option for providing Internet service to communities in Nova Scotia. FTTH uses existing ‘dark’ or unused optical fibres. Volunteers form Chebucto Community Net will do a presentation and lead a discussion on the costs and feasibility of this new technology and how it can help to bridge the ‘digital divide’.

Computer Basics-An introduction to computers. No experience required.

An introduction to navigating the Internet and using a web browser. Prerequisites: Beyond the Basics or basic mouse, keyboard and Windows skills.

Saturday, June 5/10-11:30 a.m.
Registration began May 4.

Email Basics-Learn to send, reply, forward and delete email. Prerequisite: How to Navigate the Internet or familiarity using web browsers.

Monday, June 14/10-11:30 a.m.

English Language Learning (ELL)-Get help with your English language skills at volunteer tutor programs sponsored by Halifax Public Libraries and the Nova Scotia Department of Immigration.

The programs are free and open to:

-Permanent residents of Canada.
-Canadian citizens born outside of Canada (though services to recent immigrants to Nova Scotia will be given priority).
-Protected persons as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
-Foreign nationals temporarily residing in Nova Scotia who have been nominated (received Certificate of Nomination) under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program and their dependants.

Win Free Comic Books-Ages 5-15. If you like to read comics and graphic novels, this giveaway is for you! Whenever you check out comics or graphic novels from the library in May, ask for a ballot (one per visit) to enter the draw to win a package of comics. Each branch has two packages to give away, one for kids and one for teens. Contact your branch for more information.

Swing into a summer of reading by joining kids across Canada in the TD Summer Reading Club. Register at the library and you’ll receive a kit including a poster and a colourful logbook. Enter the draw for a chance to win a fabulous grand prize. Then, visit the library to collect stickers and cool rewards as you read your way through summer. Summer Reading Club Kickoff Party: Wednesday, June 30/10 a.m. Featuring games, crafts, prizes, cake and juice. Drop by anytime between 10-11:30 a.m.

Baby & Tot Time-Ages 0-35 months. Join the adventure as we listen to stories, learn new songs and share in interactive play.

Tuesdays/10:15-10:45 a.m. until May 18. Free tickets given out 15 minutes before the program.

Puppet Shows for all ages (unless indicated). Puppet shows bring favourite stories to life.
